Fish: Drunk on Sake

At an odd ceremony dating back to the Edo Period, carp are made to consume a large dose of sake as they "symbolically take on people’s calamities." After drinking the sake, the fish are released into a river.

This seems like an extremely weird tradition. It is certainly a very vast difference in culture between us and Japanese culture. But then again I'm sure in that even our most perfect of traditions can be misconstrued as odd or even barbaric. If you honestly think about it isn't it odd that we commemerate people so gravely here in the U.S. ,but in Japan the only celebrate death as the moving of ones spirit to a better place, and parties are held. I'd honestly like to travel to Japan one day just to see this festival.
