Interviewing Julia Child (Not the Meryl Streep Version)

When New York Times reporter Joyce Purnick interviewed Julia Child in 1973, she encountered "an impatient, stern, dyspeptic Julia," at odds with the portrayal in the film Julie & Julia.

Dunno, that sounds like every other profile of Julia child that I've ever heard, but this time written b someone who wasn't expecting it. Almost every other profile I've ever read defined her as sharp, forthright and commanding, and if you watch her closely on the French chef, she is just that, though at times she may come across as unserious. Most of her attitude was along the lines of "this isn't that hard people!" and fed by the annoyance of people who would winge about cooking being difficult. As described by the writer of that article, nothing Julia said in the cab was really prickly, unless it was said to someone it described...

 

Seriously? The reporter talked to Julia for perhaps 30 minutes 37 years ago and now she's the expert on Julia who is going to correct all of our misconceptions?

And as EterPeter commented, the writer's view isn't really that different than what the public knew of Julia. She was intelligent and strong. Of course she was willing to share her well-thought-out opinions on the meat boycott.
