Midwestern Wine Region Will Be World's Largest

The federal government has approved a proposal for a new wine region stretching across parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Effective July 22, the enormous 29,914 square mile Upper Mississippi Valley AVA will be the largest wine region in the world.

Ouch.

Soil, slope, elevation & weather homogeneous over a monstrosity encompassing Cubs, Sox, Brewers, Twins and a handful minor league clubs west of the Mississippi?

There's a punchline there somewhere. Unfortunately, it's going to be the hardworking & diverse collection of growers/producers who have just been dumped and lumped.

Nothing like that Western Hemisphere terroir.

Er, isn't south eastern Australian bigger?
