Snails in the Garden: What Would Pollan Do?

What does Michael Pollan do to get rid of snails intruding on his garden? "He puts out small bowls of beer. The snails and slugs dive into the beer and expire."

Beer works. But I found that a bonus of not using chemicals in my garden is a significant increase in lizards in residence. I'm guessing they are eating the snails which used to plague the garden. Nice, neat, sustainable solution.
